Doug Smithfield

Writer · Northern Minnesota · Twin Cities

Doug Smithfield is a writer and author whose roots run deep in the beautiful northland of Minnesota. Raised among the lakes, pines, and granite shores of the region, he spent many of his formative years in Duluth and across northern Minnesota — a landscape whose long winters, quiet harbors, and small-town rhythms quietly shaped his voice as a storyteller.

He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he studied with an eye toward the written word and a heart already turned northward. After years of work and wandering across the region, Doug now resides in the Twin Cities, though the call of Lake Superior, the smell of pine, and the long blue light of a Duluth summer evening still find their way into much of what he writes.

Summers are often spent on the road — traveling all over Minnesota and the greater Midwest, camping under tall trees, paddling quiet lakes, and enjoying the outdoors at the unhurried pace the region rewards. State parks, gravel back roads, lakeshore campgrounds, and small-town diners all serve as both classroom and inspiration, and many of his stories are quietly born around a campfire or on a long drive between somewhere and somewhere else.

His work is informed by the people and places of the upper Midwest — the kind of stories told over coffee at a small-town café, the kind that don't shout but stay with you. Critics have described his prose as "unhurried but precise," and readers tend to use words like "warm," "honest," and "true to the land."

When he isn't writing or out exploring, Doug can usually be found with a book in hand, a hot cup of coffee within reach, and a steady eye on the horizon — somewhere between the cities he calls home and the northland he still calls his.
